India's first astronaut was Rakesh Sharma, who made his first space flight in April 1985 on the Soviet Soyuz T-11 spacecraft, along with cosmonauts Yuri Malyshev and Gennady Strekalov. India became the fourteenth country whose citizen flew into space.

India's second astronaut, 41 years after Sharma, was Shubhanshu Shukla, who flew as part of a private crew on the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft. The flight took place in June 2025 and included a docking with the ISS.
